Polish Military Reports Incursion of Balloons From Belarus

The Polish military said it detected objects entering its airspace from Belarus during the night of Jan. 28.

“The flight of all objects was continuously monitored by military radar systems of the Polish Armed Forces.

In order to ensure safety, temporary restrictions were introduced on the use of part of the airspace over the Podlaskie Voivodeship for civilian traffic. These measures were preventive in nature and complied with applicable procedures.

Based on the analysis conducted, including flight characteristics, speed and direction of movement, it was determined that these were most likely objects resembling balloons, moving in accordance with meteorological conditions,” the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces said in a statement.

It added that no threat to airspace security had been identified.

The command stressed that such incidents are part of “hybrid activity” that Poland faces on its eastern flank.

Police and the Border Guard have not yet reported finding the objects on the ground. It is likely that the incident involved cigarette smuggling.
