Lithuania’s State Border Guard Service reported the detention of an unusual would-be border crosser. A Polish citizen intended to use a ladder to climb over the fence at the border with Belarus.

The incident occurred on Wednesday near Druskininkai in the area of the settlement of Jaskonys. Border guards detained the 44-year-old man 200 metres from the border. He had a homemade ladder that he intended to use to overcome the barrier. The man was also carrying a large amount of cash in zlotys and US dollars — almost €60,000 in equivalent value. He also had a bicycle, a backpack, a sleeping bag and personal belongings, including a hammer, knife and nails.

The man was detected using surveillance equipment and a patrol was then dispatched to the location.

The man confirmed that he intended to climb over the fence and enter Belarus. The motives for his actions were not disclosed.

An investigation has been launched into attempted illegal crossing of the state border and cash smuggling. By court decision, the man has been placed in custody for one month.
