He faces deportation to Belarus. Human rights defender Raman Kisliak told Pozirk.
The Belarusian man was detained on November 6 during a document check in the metro. His Belarusian passport and temporary identity document issued in Georgia had expired. After the check, he was taken to the Migration Department.
“He will be brought before a court shortly for detention pending deportation,” Kisliak said.
According to the human rights defender, the man had previously applied for international protection in Georgia because he was facing politically motivated persecution in Belarus. However, the Georgian authorities refused to grant him refugee status.
Kisliak specified that the Migration Department and a city court had both issued negative decisions.
“He has not yet received a decision from the Court of Appeal, but, as I understand it, that decision was also negative,” he added.
The detainee’s name has not been disclosed for security reasons.
