Among those fined for celebrating Hukanne Viasny in Homiel was police major Viktar Shypkou, Homiel Viasna reports.
It should be recalled that several dozen people celebrated Hukanne Viasny on March 21 in the enclosed courtyard of a restaurant. They were detained for “violating the procedure for holding mass events”. According to human rights defenders, one person received 15 days of administrative arrest, while several others were fined.
Viktar Shypkou is a local police inspector with the Homiel District Department of Internal Affairs. He is involved in folklore and local history research. Shypkou has received state awards, including the “For Spiritual Revival” prize for his contribution to preserving folk traditions.
