New Constitution of Kazakhstan Supported by 87.15% in Referendum

The Central Election Commission of Kazakhstan has announced preliminary results of the constitutional referendum held on Sunday.

According to the commission, voter turnout reached 73.12%. A total of 87.15% of voters who came to polling stations supported the new constitution.

The constitutional changes were initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Around 80% of the text of the basic law has been updated. The key changes include a transition to a unicameral parliament — the Kurultai, the introduction of the position of vice president, the creation of the People’s Council of Kazakhstan, the закрепление of the tenge in the constitution, clarification of the status of the Russian language — from “equal with” to “alongside” Kazakh — and a ban on dual citizenship.

The new constitution is expected to enter into force on July 1, 2026.
