The National Art Museum of Belarus has opened the exhibition Mikalai Zalozny. The Palette of Life to mark the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
The painter’s palette is displayed as a work of art in its own right. Layers of paint have turned into a vivid relief, seemingly embodying his artistic manner and style — broad impasto brushstrokes of bright color, dynamic expression, and explosive temperament. Even the simplest everyday objects, incorporated into this system of creativity, dissolve into patches of color before coming together again.
Mikalai Zalozny is regarded as one of the outstanding colorists of Belarusian art.
He was born in Ukraine and studied in Belarus. He graduated from the Minsk Art College and the Belarusian State Theatre and Art Institute, later teaching at both institutions. He also served in the Second World War.
The anniversary exhibition at the National Art Museum spans the period from 1965 to 1982, tracing the artist’s development from a promising young painter to a mature master.
The exhibition features works from the National Art Museum’s collection, the holdings of the Belarusian Union of Artists, the artist’s family collection, and private collections, as well as photographic reproductions and photographs from various archives. The exhibition is complemented by graphic portraits of Mikalai Zalozny created by his fellow artist Mikhail Lisouski.
The exhibition will run through August 9.
