Minsk Woman Suspected of Organizing Illegal Migration, 10 Foreign Nationals Found in Her Apartment

A 65-year-old woman has been detained in Minsk on suspicion of organizing the illegal stay of foreign nationals in Belarus. The operation was carried out by officers of the Third Directorate of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption (GUBOPiK) together with citizenship and migration units.

According to the Interior Ministry, the previously convicted pensioner had for an extended period provided accommodation, for payment, to migrants from South Asia and North Africa who had no legal grounds to remain in Belarus.

During two months of surveillance, investigators identified about 70 tenants from 10 countries. At the time of the arrest, 10 foreign nationals were staying in the four-room apartment.

Authorities say the woman charged each tenant $100. According to investigators, hundreds of foreign nationals passed through the apartment over the years.

Investigators have opened a criminal case on charges of organizing illegal migration. The suspect has been placed in a temporary detention facility. Some of the foreign nationals who had been living in the apartment have already been deported. The others have been detained to provide witness statements and will also be expelled from Belarus afterward.
