On Tuesday morning, a border surveillance system in Druskininkai District detected two people approaching from the Belarusian side. The border in this area is fenced with barbed wire, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reports.
On the Lithuanian side, a pipe carries the Kusenka Stream into Lake Latežeris. The pipe, approximately 2.8 metres in diameter, begins one metre from Belarusian territory and runs beneath the fence. At its outlet on the Lithuanian side, sturdy lockable metal gates have been installed to prevent migrants from passing through.
The two migrants entered the stream from Belarus and climbed into the pipe. They were carrying metal shears, which they presumably intended to use to cut through the gates.
After the migrants were spotted by surveillance cameras, border guards were dispatched to the scene. Hearing the sound of an approaching vehicle, the migrants climbed out of the pipe and returned to Belarus.
