Main Task Is Proper Restoration, Minsk Authorities Say After Fire in City Centre

The Emergency Situations Commission will meet today to address the aftermath of the major fire in central Minsk. The roof and attic of a building on Lenina Street caught fire on Sunday evening, with the blaze spreading across more than 1,000 square metres.

According to the head of Minsk’s Leninski District administration, Raman Melnik, residents of the building have been temporarily relocated.

“All issues related to providing temporary accommodation for the residents of this building are being addressed. This task has been completed. Those who required assistance have been accommodated and provided with hygiene supplies and medical support. Psychologists are also working with them. That is an important part of the response. Most importantly, this work is continuing,” he said.

The main task now, he said, is restoring the building.

“It is clear that the current task, and it is a very difficult one, is to restore everything that was damaged by the fire quickly and properly. Today, the Emergency Situations Commission will hold a meeting. All the agencies involved are working. This includes the police, who are guarding the building because utilities have been disconnected. It also includes the district administration’s services, including housing and utilities, which are monitoring the condition of the building together with Emergencies Ministry personnel.

After that, we will proceed with restoration and resolve all outstanding issues in accordance with established procedures. We have received no complaints from residents. However, work will still have to be carried out in individual apartments because a large amount of water used to extinguish the fire entered the flats, even though the floors remained intact and withstood the blaze. So there is still a great deal of work ahead,” he added.
