The Belarusian Emergencies Ministry has received a response from the Lithuanian side regarding the incident at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant, the ministry’s press service reported.
“According to the notification, a fire occurred in the air-filtration unit of the shot-blasting system at the primary radioactive-waste processing complex. The fire was extinguished, there were no casualties, and no release of radioactive materials occurred. The event is preliminarily classified as ‘below scale’ on the IAEA International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale. No external assistance was required,” the press release said.
On 25 November, a fire broke out at the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in Lithuania in the primary radioactive-waste processing complex. Fire crews arrived at 17:40 Belarus time (16:40 Lithuania time). The fire was contained at 18:05 and fully extinguished at 20:07. It was reported that there was no radiological damage to the environment or the population, and no injuries.
According to the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry, continuous radiation monitoring is being conducted in the Braslaw District of the Viciebsk Region, and no exceedances of control radiation levels have been recorded.
The Belarusian Foreign Ministry had demanded that Lithuania provide data on the incident, calling this “especially cynical” against the backdrop of Lithuania’s demands for transparency regarding the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant.
