Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the chargé d’affaires of the Belarusian embassy and expressed a strong protest over the violation of the country’s airspace on the night of May 13, 2026.
The Lithuanian side stated that the incident created a direct threat to civil aviation safety and made it necessary to impose temporary restrictions in the airspace over Vilnius International Airport.
The Belarusian representative was once again reminded that such incidents are regarded as serious violations of international law and deliberate hybrid attacks against Lithuania, for which Belarus bears responsibility.
The Foreign Ministry repeated its demand that Belarus comply with its international obligations to control activities on its territory and in its airspace, and immediately take effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
It should be recalled that the previous disruptions to Vilnius Airport operations caused by weather balloons occurred in early April.
