Lithuania May Get a New Prime Minister

A new governing coalition has been formed in Lithuania. The updated government will be made up of the Social Democratic Party, the Democratic Union “For Lithuania”, and the Lithuanian Farmers, Greens and Christian Families Union.

The Social Democrats had previously ruled out a coalition with the Dawn of Nemunas party.

A new coalition agreement has been drafted. The Social Democrats will retain the positions of prime minister and speaker of the Seimas.

According to Lrytas, Social Democratic Party leader Mindaugas Sinkevičius has decided after all to take up the post of prime minister. No official announcement has yet been made. Sinkevičius is expected to inform party colleagues at a meeting scheduled in the coming days. Lithuania’s government is currently headed by Inga Ruginienė.

Notably, since the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party won the 2024 election, its leader has not served as prime minister.
