Latvian Prime Minister Resigns

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa has submitted her resignation to the Saeima. This was reported by LSM.

“My goal was clear — the development of the state, the well-being and security of the people, so that our children value their home, their country — Latvia! Parties and coalitions change, but Latvia remains, and people remain here.

Now political jealousy and narrow party interests have prevailed over responsibility. Having seen a strong candidate for the post of defence minister, political windbags chose a crisis — a government crisis.

Therefore, I declare that I am resigning. This is not an easy decision, but in the current situation it is an honest one. I am resigning, but I am not giving up and not leaving. The promises I made to the people of Latvia, to everyone with whom we defended European values together on Dome Square, will continue to be fulfilled by me and New Unity,” she said at a press conference.

Siliņa’s resignation followed an incident involving drones entering Latvian territory from Russia. One of them crashed on the grounds of an oil depot in Rēzekne.

Following the incident, Siliņa dismissed Defence Minister Andris Sprūds, who represented the Progressives party, and proposed appointing Colonel Raivis Melnis as his replacement.

The Progressives later announced that they would no longer support Siliņa. They called for negotiations on forming a new government.
