Former political prisoner Maria Kalesnikava said during today’s press conference in Kyiv that she had thanked the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. special envoy John Coale, and had conveyed her gratitude to Alyaksandr Lukashenka through security service officers.
“I feel an incredible happiness starting from yesterday. As I already said, I had the opportunity to thank the President of Ukraine. I had the opportunity, through the Belarusian security services, to thank Alyaksandr Ryhoravich, and I did so. I hope that my words of gratitude were conveyed to him. They are absolutely sincere. I will repeat once again: I welcome the release of people, and I hope that these first steps in this direction, now, at this time, will continue. And I think that if we can do anything in this direction, we will do it, but I believe that now everything depends entirely not on us. And we simply welcome this and will be very happy when everyone who is in prisons gains freedom. When we can all return home. For all of us this is a very painful issue. And these first steps inspire optimism. And we hope that this will continue“, she said.
“Of course, I had the opportunity to thank the special envoy of Donald Trump, Mr. Coale, and I did so as well — warmly, sincerely. Because this is, you know, such a simple human thing: when people whom you do not know at all influence your fate, the fate of others close to you. And in such a context, yes, when the result is that we all meet, embrace, and are simply happy to be together, and when, essentially, unfamiliar people are involved in this — it always warms the heart. And of course, these words of gratitude are sincere, and they do not actually express the full depth of the feelings that I am experiencing“, the former political prisoner added.
