Belarus’ Investigative Committee has reported the detention of a suspect in the case involving the poisoning of children in Minsk Region.
“The suspect was detained by police officers as part of a criminal case opened under Part 1 of Article 336 of the Criminal Code of Belarus. Investigative actions are being carried out with him. Other victims are being identified. The products have been recalled and seized to prevent their further sale. A number of expert examinations have been ordered,” the Investigative Committee said in a statement.
The committee said the poisoning was caused by violations of sanitary and epidemiological regulations committed by an employee during the production of dairy products.
The Investigative Committee also said it is conducting extensive preventive work with enterprises in the sector across the country. Managers and employees have been reminded of the need to comply with sanitary standards and regulations during production processes.
“The inspections also established that such violations are not systemic and are not widespread in nature. No other violations of this kind have been recorded,” the committee said.
It should be recalled that on June 2 and 3, 30 children were admitted to the Barysau Central District Hospital suffering from nausea and vomiting. The children attended different kindergartens in the city. Another 13 children were affected in other localities across Minsk Region. The Investigative Committee opened a criminal case under an article concerning violations of sanitary regulations (Part 1 of Article 336 of the Criminal Code).
On Monday, the Health Ministry said the poisoning had been caused by the fermented dairy drink “Bifidin,” produced by LLC “Biomolprom.” Laboratory tests confirmed that the product did not meet microbiological safety requirements. The company’s operations were suspended.
