Belarus’s Health Ministry has identified the cause of a mass food poisoning incident involving children in the Minsk region as the fermented dairy drink Bifidin produced by Biomolprom LLC.
Laboratory tests confirmed that the product failed to meet microbiological safety standards.
The company’s operations have been suspended and sales of its products have been halted.
“The sanitary and epidemiological service of the Health Ministry is completing its investigation into the causes of the hospitalization of children in the Minsk region. In order to prevent further spread and eliminate the epidemiological threat associated with products manufactured by Biomolprom LLC, these products have been withdrawn from circulation,” said Deputy Health Minister and Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Belarus Sviatlana Nechai.
As previously reported, on June 2 and 3, 30 children suffering from nausea and vomiting were admitted to the Barysau Central District Hospital. The children attended different kindergartens across the city. Another 13 children were affected in other localities of the Minsk region.
The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case under Part 1 of Article 336 of the Criminal Code, which concerns violations of sanitary regulations.
