The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has lifted all restrictions on Belarusian and Russian athletes. They will be allowed to participate in all individual and team competitions under the FIE banner while competing under their national flags.
“Starting with the 2026 Senior World Fencing Championships in Hong Kong, China, all restrictive measures will be lifted, and athletes and officials holding Belarusian or Russian passports will be permitted to participate in all FIE individual and team competitions under their national abbreviations, in their national uniforms, with their flags and national anthems,” the federation said.
The FIE stated that the decision reflects the federation’s commitment to the Olympic Charter, including the principles of non-discrimination, equal treatment and the universality of sport.
In 2023, the FIE barred all Belarusian and Russian athletes and officials from competition. The membership of the Belarusian and Russian fencing federations in the FIE was also suspended. In May 2025, the FIE allowed athletes from Belarus and Russia to compete in team events under neutral status.
In May this year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) lifted all restrictions on Belarusian athletes and recommended that sports federations refrain from applying restrictions.
