Andrei Khmel, chairman of the Hrodna City Executive Committee, visited the parts of the city hardest hit by the torrential downpour that struck on Aug. 1. Together with the city’s emergency response headquarters, he inspected Nemanskaya Street and Padperasyolka Street to assess the extent of the damage and determine the scope of recovery work.
The flooding and damage were caused by an exceptionally heavy cloudburst, which overloaded the city’s stormwater drainage system.
According to the city authorities, recovery efforts are continuing around the clock under Khmel’s personal supervision. Residents are continuing to submit reports through the city’s chatbot, and these are being promptly forwarded to municipal services.
During the visit, Khmel also met with residents of Nemanskaya Street and Padperasyolka Street, where access roads to homes were damaged by the flooding. Acting on his instructions, repair crews have begun restoring access to the affected properties.
According to Khmel, the private residential sector suffered the most significant damage. He said the authorities plan to involve engineering specialists in developing solutions to help prevent similar flooding in the future.
Khmel said restoring transport access remains the top priority. He estimated that the main consequences of the storm would be addressed within one to two days, while longer-term recovery work would continue according to schedule.
“The storm caused many problems, but we will reach every resident. The private sector suffered the most. We are now speaking with people on Nemanskaya Street, listening to their concerns and will provide assistance. Our immediate priority is to restore road access. To prevent this kind of flooding in the future, we will bring in engineering designers to develop solutions. All city services are working today, and the scale of the damage is significant. Together, we will restore order within one or two days, while longer-term tasks will continue as planned,” he said.
