Health Ministry Warns Belarusians About Peak Tick Activity

Belarus’ Health Ministry has reminded residents about precautions against ticks during the height of the season. According to the ministry, the peak period for tick bites falls in May and June. Ticks typically wait in grass and low shrubs, attaching themselves to clothing at the level of the lower leg or thigh before moving upward.

Ticks can carry Lyme disease, tick-borne encephalitis, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis. To reduce the risk of bites, the ministry recommends wearing light-coloured clothing that covers the body, using repellents, staying on paths, avoiding lying on grass, and regularly checking oneself, children and pets during and after walks. Young children should preferably be carried or transported in a stroller.

If an attached tick is found, people are advised not to attempt to remove it themselves. Instead, they should seek medical attention at the nearest healthcare facility as soon as possible, the ministry said.

The Health Ministry also reminded the public about vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis. To ensure immunity develops before the start of the season, the recommended schedule includes a first dose in autumn and a second dose in winter or early spring. Vaccination can also be received during the summer, although individuals remain vulnerable while antibodies are developing. Specialists noted that a full vaccination course does not provide complete protection and does not eliminate the need to follow preventive measures.
