The drone that crashed in Lithuania’s Utena District on May 17 was equipped with explosives, local police reported.
Specialists from the Aras anti-terrorism unit confirmed the presence of explosives at the crash site. Due to the threat to public safety, authorities decided to destroy the hazardous materials directly at the scene without transporting them.
Deputy head of the Chief Police Commissariat of Utena County Mindaugas Puskunigis told reporters that the drone does not resemble a Shahed drone. There were no signs of an explosion at the crash site. Some fragments remain on the surface, while others are embedded in the ground, LRT reported.
“There are many small fragments, the drone is completely destroyed,” Puskunigis said.
Bomb disposal specialists and law enforcement officers are working at the scene. Residents of nearby homes were asked to temporarily leave their properties.
As previously reported, a border patrol on the border with Belarus spotted a drone flying deeper into Lithuania on the morning of May 17. Later that evening, a local resident discovered the drone’s wreckage in Utena District. According to preliminary information, the crashed drone was likely Ukrainian.
