Driverless Bus Fatally Runs Over Elderly Couple in Chavusy

An elderly married couple died in Chavusy after being hit by a moving bus with no driver inside, the Investigative Committee’s press service reported. The tragedy occurred this morning at the town bus station.

A MAZ bus began moving on its own and fatally struck two pedestrians — a 70-year-old man and his 66-year-old wife.

According to preliminary information, the 41-year-old driver arrived at the station, closed the doors and left the bus without turning off the engine. He went into the station building to register his route sheet. At that moment, the bus started moving toward retail kiosks where the couple were walking.

After hitting the pedestrians, the bus collided with a parked passenger car. The driver attempted to stop the bus from moving, but was unsuccessful.

The Chavusy District Department of the Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case on charges of violating traffic rules resulting in the negligent deaths of two people. An investigative task force is working at the scene.
