Czech Senate Calls for Expanded Sanctions Against Representatives of the Lukashenka Regime

The Czech Senate has adopted a resolution “On Support for the Democratic Forces of Belarus and an Appeal to the Government of the Czech Republic.” The document was approved on July 8 during the upper chamber’s 27th session.

In the resolution, senators recalled an earlier decision in support of Belarus’ democratic forces adopted following Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya‘s address to the Czech Senate in 2021. The document states that the Belarusian authorities systematically violate human rights and actively support Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, posing a threat to European security. The Senate notes that despite the release of some prisoners in 2025–2026, more than 800 political prisoners remain in Belarus.

The Czech Senate describes the regime of Aliaksandr Lukashenka as “illegitimate, unlawful and criminal.” The senators also backed the idea that an international tribunal or a special tribunal on Ukraine should investigate the possible responsibility of Lukashenka and his associates.

The document also contains a number of recommendations to the Czech government. In particular, the Senate called for continued support for civil liberties and the rule of law in Belarus, efforts to secure the release of all political prisoners, financial and practical assistance for human rights defenders and independent media, including through visa mechanisms, and the expansion of sanctions lists targeting Belarusian citizens involved in the most serious crimes falling under international jurisdiction.

In addition, the senators recommended that Czech representatives to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly join the Alliance for a Democratic Belarus, continue supporting the Belarusian diaspora in exile, and facilitate visits by relatives of Belarusians granted international protection in the Czech Republic.
