Communications Ministry Sees Untapped Transit Potential for Belarus

Belarus has untapped transit potential in the field of telecommunications network development, Minister of Communications and Informatization Kiryl Zaleski said at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

“We have three components for developing the digital future that are also relevant within the CIS framework. The first is communications, the second is infrastructure, and the third is data processing itself. As for communications, this is a particularly relevant issue for Belarus. We are a transit country, and the shortest and fastest routing of channels to Europe from the CIS region, and further from Asia, passes through our territory. I believe we have untapped potential in the routing and construction of cross-border and transit communications networks so that our domestic traffic does not have to pass through third countries,” he said, BelTA reported.

Zaleski also noted that Belarus is ready to provide sites for data centers. However, he said this would require addressing issues related to data-processing regulation.

“When we agree on cooperation regarding data centers, we also need to agree on the legal framework governing data circulation. If we are prepared to open the door somewhat to allow part of our data to be processed not only domestically but also at facilities within integration associations, including those within the CIS, then we need to agree on standards and on trust in various mechanisms,” he said.
