“Charnobylski Shlyakh” to Be Held Under Slogan “For an Independent Nuclear-Free Belarus”

Democratic forces have convened the organizing committee for “Charnobylski Shlyakh” under the slogan “For an Independent Nuclear-Free Belarus.” The Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya reported on a meeting of the organizing committee dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Office, environmental organizations and the Belarusian diaspora.

This year, the event will be held under the slogan “For an Independent Nuclear-Free Belarus.” According to the organizers, in the 40 years since the disaster, the threat has not disappeared, while the Belarusian authorities remain unaccountable to society.

The organizing committee is coordinating events around the world with the participation of democratic forces, environmental organizations and the Belarusian diaspora. The committee’s goal is described as defining common messages and formats for the event, as well as coordinating activities in different cities around the world.

For the first time, a commemorative “Charnobylski Shlyakh” run dedicated to the liquidators of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster will take place in Vilnius on April 26. Participants in the run will honor heroes from Belarus, Ukraine and Lithuania — those who fought fires, carried out decontamination work and built the sarcophagus, sacrificing their health and lives.

In recent years, events dedicated to the anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster have taken place in different countries and have been organized by Belarusians abroad.
