Bialiatski Meets Leader of Lithuanian Conservatives

Nobel laureate Ales Bialiatski met on Monday with the leader of Lithuania’s conservatives and member of the Seimas Laurynas Kasčiūnas. His party is currently in opposition.

As noted by the Viasna human rights centre, Bialiatski and Kasčiūnas discussed mechanisms for supporting the Belarusian democratic community outside the country. Particular attention was paid to the work of the Viasna human rights centre. The discussion also addressed the issue of harsh repression in Belarus, conditions of detention for political prisoners, and pressure on the European Humanities University.

The sides also touched on sanctions policy and support for Lithuania’s initiative at the International Criminal Court. Bialiatski and Kasčiūnas discussed the importance of preserving Belarusian culture and identity in exile.

On the same day, Ales Bialiatski also held a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė.
