The United States has authorised Boeing Corporation to work directly with Belarusian airline Belavia. The airline’s chief executive, Ihar Charhinets, announced the decision, BelTA reported.

According to him, the US Department of Commerce issued Boeing with permission to work with Belavia.

“This will allow Belavia to directly obtain spare parts, components and software for the aircraft currently operated by the airline. In addition, this opens the way for negotiations on purchasing aircraft directly from Boeing Corporation. I would like to remind you that the US Department of the Treasury had previously issued the same authorisation, which created the technical possibility for direct cooperation between Belavia and Boeing Corporation. A year ago, the US government issued a permit that lifted all sanctions, political sanctions, against Belavia,” he said.

Chyhinets said the decisions had become possible following talks between Aliaksandr Lukashenka and a US delegation.

Belarus’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Valiantsin Rybakou, said on the Pervyy Informatsionnyy channel that during a September visit by a US delegation to Minsk, Aliaksandr Lukashenka met with US special envoy John Coale. The Belarusian ruler outlined a range of key issues whose resolution by Washington would provide the foundation for further constructive dialogue between the two countries.

He noted that personal sanctions against the head of Belaruskali, Andrei Rybakou, had recently been lifted.

“Just yesterday, another positive decision was made. The US Department of Commerce granted Boeing a permit, a licence, to work with the national carrier, Belavia,” Rybakou said.

He added that consultations and meetings in Washington were continuing, with intensive and successful work under way, and that only several more issues remained to be resolved before relations could move to a new level of engagement.
