A 47-year-old Belarusian citizen has been charged with money laundering in Estonia. According to the prosecution, he acted as part of a group and carried out cash and cryptocurrency transactions worth more than €861,000 over a three-month period.

According to Delfi, the group helped launder criminal proceeds by exchanging cash for cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency for cash in order to conceal the true origin of the money and its owner. One of the clients of the money-laundering operation had been convicted of drug-related offences.

The group used various techniques and anonymization tools. For example, when meeting, participants in transactions identified one another by a banknote serial number that had been shared in advance through a messaging app.

According to the prosecution, the Belarusian citizen organized the transactions and also took part in them. The man was detained on June 13 this year and remanded in custody. His detention was extended this week.
