Belarusian Attacks Polish Customs Officer While Defending Smuggled Cigarettes

A Belarusian citizen attempted to bring smuggled cigarettes into Poland and attacked a Polish customs officer after they were discovered.

The Belarusian was crossing the Belarusian-Polish border in a Land Rover through the Terespol checkpoint. During the inspection, Polish customs officers found hidden compartments in the vehicle containing more than 1,100 packs of cigarettes, the Lublin Customs and Tax Office in Biała Podlaska reported.

During the inspection, the Belarusian attacked a customs officer. Police were called to the scene.

A criminal case has been opened against the man for smuggling. His vehicle has been confiscated. He has also been charged with violating the bodily integrity of a public official. The offense carries a penalty of up to three years in prison. Customs officers have sent a request to Poland’s Border Guard for the deportation of the Belarusian citizen.
