Belarus to Launch First Electric Buses on Suburban Routes in 2026

The first electric buses for suburban transport will appear in Belarus in 2026. The vehicles, which have a range of about 100 kilometres, are currently undergoing tests. The information was disclosed in an interview on CTV television by Deputy Director General for Innovation Development at the Belkommunmash holding, Aleh Bytsko.

The buses will operate between Minsk and nearby satellite towns. Employees of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant will be the first to try them. In 2026 the route network will expand, and the electric bus model itself is expected to be significantly improved.

“Next year we plan to upgrade this electric bus, extend its autonomous range to 250 kilometres and provide fast-charging capability. The head of state has set the task of ensuring suburban transport with electric vehicles.

Therefore we are actively involved in this process, and next year such an electric bus will definitely carry passengers between Minsk and Smalyavichy. Subsequently, other satellite towns are also expected to be equipped with this type of transport,” Bytsko said.

The electric buses were designed with the specifics of suburban routes in mind: enhanced seat comfort, seat belts, and strengthened body-frame requirements. For the first time, Belarusian engineers were assisted by scientists in the design work and engineering calculations.
