As part of training for the combat use of nuclear weapons, one of Belarus’s missile units moved today into its designated area, the Belarusian Defence Ministry reported.
Personnel carried out measures to secure, defend and comprehensively support the area. Combat crews conducted a set of activities to prepare for receiving special munitions for the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system and equipping missile carriers with them.
After the missiles were loaded onto launchers, the unit covertly moved to a new area, where it simulated missile launches against designated targets.
Aviation was also involved in the exercise. Crews of carrier aircraft equipped with airborne weapons conducted training-combat sorties, took up air patrol positions and simulated bombing using special munitions against a mock enemy.
As part of the exercise, the Russian side practised practical measures to bring formations and units responsible for nuclear weapons employment to the highest levels of combat readiness.
As the Russian Defence Ministry reported, the exercise included the delivery of nuclear munitions to field storage sites in missile brigade deployment areas.
“Personnel of missile formations are carrying out training-combat tasks involving the receipt of special munitions for the Iskander-M operational-tactical missile system, equipping missile carriers with them and covert movement to designated deployment areas in preparation for missile launches”, the press release said.
According to the Russian ministry, more than 64,000 personnel, over 7,800 pieces of weapons and military equipment, including more than 200 missile launchers, more than 140 aircraft, 73 surface ships and 13 submarines — including eight strategic missile submarines — are taking part in the exercise.
“Issues of joint preparation and use of nuclear weapons stationed on the territory of the Republic of Belarus are also being practised during the exercise”, the Russian Defence Ministry added.
On May 18, the Belarusian Defence Ministry announced the start of training for the combat use of nuclear weapons. It was reported that, in coordination with the Russian side, issues related to the delivery of nuclear munitions and preparation for their use would be practised.
The Russian Defence Ministry had previously announced that it would conduct an exercise on May 19–21 involving the preparation and employment of nuclear forces under conditions of a threat of aggression. The Russian statement also referred to practising actions with weapons deployed in Belarus.
“During the exercise, issues of joint preparation and use of nuclear weapons stationed on the territory of the Republic of Belarus will be practised”, the statement said.
