BAA Expects Slowdown in Car Market in 2026

The Belarusian Automobile Association expects the domestic car market to slow down in 2026. This was stated at a press conference at the National Press Center by Director of Avtotsentr na MKAD LLC and Chairman of the BAA Board Siarhei Varyvoda.

“We believe that the market will slow down, and most likely it will be a matter of stabilizing the overall market,” he said.

Last year, the market volume grew by 14%.

According to him, growth in the share of sales by legal entities is possible only through redistribution of the market from individuals in favor of legal entities, including Belarusian car manufacturers. Earlier, the BAA noted that last year the share of cars imported by individuals increased, with about two-thirds of such vehicles imported for resale.

“In our view, the growth in the share of electric vehicles will continue, primarily due to imports by individuals. On the other hand, it is obvious that the share of hybrid vehicles will decline, as their taxation has essentially been equalized with that of vehicles with internal combustion engines,” he said.

According to him, sales volumes and market shares of individual players will depend on whether they have benefits or preferences.

“We assume that the growth of local car production will continue, and that imports from the territory of the Union State will recover due to a reduction in imports from outside the Eurasian Economic Union. In this case, I am referring to legal entities,” he said.

Speaking about prices on the market, Varyvoda said they would remain relatively stable at least in the first half of the year.

In 2025, the market was influenced by growth in consumer lending, stable prices, and rising household incomes. BAA dealer sales exceeded 50,000 vehicles last year.

“It is likely that in certain periods, including at the end of the year, so-called front-loaded demand came into play, when citizens try to purchase a car ahead of another change in import conditions, price increases, and so on. This applies in particular to sequential hybrids.

The main negative factors noted by the association that affected the market, in particular the sales of official dealers, were the unjustified commercial use of benefits granted to citizens when importing vehicles for personal use under Presidential Decree No. 140, as well as a significant, in some cases even abrupt, change in recycling fee rates. In accordance with Council of Ministers Resolution No. 50 of January 26 of the previous year, rates for passenger cars imported from the EU increased multiple times,” he said.
