2009 Killing of Russian Man in Buda-Kashaliou District Solved 17 Years Later

The Interior Ministry has solved the killing of a Russian man committed in the Homiel region in 2009. The suspect is a Russian citizen who is currently in custody over the killing of four people.

On March 25, 2009, a passenger on a Zhlobin-Homiel train saw a man lying on the ground under a bridge in the Buda-Kashaliou district and called the police. The man was found dead, with signs of a violent death on his body, the Investigative Committee reported.

The victim was identified as a 42-year-old resident of Russia’s Bryansk region who had a previous criminal conviction. The killing remained unsolved for years.

The suspect was identified only this year as a result of cooperation with the Russian Interior Ministry. Investigators established that the suspect, a Russian citizen, knew the victim. Shortly before the killing, he had helped the victim sell a house and received part of the proceeds from the deal. The suspect promised to help his acquaintance find a job in Belarus, but the two had a conflict on the way.

The 58-year-old suspect had previously been convicted of theft, robbery and drug trafficking. He is currently in custody in Russia on charges of killing a family of four in 1997.
