12 Kilograms of Mercury Found During Construction Work in Cherven Garage

A man carrying out construction work in a garage in Cherven discovered a cylindrical metal container buried about 20 centimeters underground. After opening it, he found mercury and called emergency services.

Specialists from the ZUBR rescue unit arrived at the scene and removed the container, which held 12 kilograms of mercury. They also collected 240 kilograms of contaminated soil from the spill site. Following demercurization work, repeat measurements showed no exceedance of permissible safety limits.

No one was injured, and there is no threat to the environment, the Ministry for Emergency Situations said.
