The Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case against a patient at the Hrodna Regional Clinical Centre. According to investigators, he set fire to a mattress in his hospital room, triggering the blaze.
The fire at the Psychiatry and Narcology Clinical Centre on Abukhava Street in Hrodna broke out at around 3 a.m. on July 19. The fire started in one of the rooms in the psychiatric ward.
A total of 254 people, including 10 children, were evacuated from the building. Firefighters rescued six patients from the danger zone. They were later hospitalised with burns affecting their bodies, airways, heads, and upper and lower limbs, covering between 20% and 40% of their bodies. They remain in stable but serious condition.
Investigators said the fire started after one of the patients allegedly used matches to set fire to a mattress in the room. The flames spread rapidly, filling the area with dense smoke.
A criminal case has been opened against the patient under Part 2 of Article 218 of the Criminal Code, which covers the intentional destruction or damage of another person’s property by a generally dangerous method.
