One hundred fourteen of the 123 people “pardoned” by Alyaksandr Lukashenka as a result of negotiations with the US side were taken from Belarus to Ukraine. Among them were Ukrainian citizens who had been held in detention, the Ukrainian Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported.
“As a result of preliminary agreements and effective negotiations with the Belarusian side, at the request and with the assistance of American partners and through the work of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, Ukraine has received 114 civilian persons, including Ukrainians who were held on the territory of the Republic of Belarus,” the press release said.
The youngest released Ukrainian is 25 years old. His wife had been returned during a previous release. He and the other Ukrainians are civilians who were detained in Belarus and accused of working for Ukrainian special services.
Political prisoners who are citizens of Belarus were also transferred to Ukraine, including well-known Belarusian public and political figures, among them Maria Kalesnikava, Viktar Babaryka, and Maryna Zolatava. After receiving necessary medical assistance, the Belarusians will be transported, at their request, to Poland and Lithuania.
“The current operation to return civilian persons is an example of successful joint work between the United States and Ukraine. We express our gratitude to the United States of America and President Donald Trump for their effective efforts to return civilian and military Ukrainians from the territory of Belarus and the Russian Federation. We also thank all involved state institutions for their assistance and joint work,” the coordination headquarters said.
