Three More Lithuanian Border Guards Detained on Suspicion of Cigarette Smuggling

Lithuanian border guards on Tuesday, September 15, detained six people as part of two investigations into the illegal trafficking of excise goods and abuse of official powers. Three of those detained are employees of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania (VSAT), the agency’s press service reported.

As part of a pre-trial investigation, a man was detained in Alytus on Tuesday morning, while in the Lazdijai District, a junior specialist from the Kabeliai Border Guard Station of the Varėna Border Guard District was detained. He was off duty at the time.

Last week, as part of the same investigation, border guards detained seven people, including three border guards.

Also on Tuesday, an operation was carried out in the Varėna District, during which 6,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes were discovered and seized.

A pre-trial investigation was launched in the case on suspicion of the illegal trafficking of excise goods and abuse of official powers.

Two men suspected of smuggling, as well as a senior border guard and a junior specialist from the Purvėnai Border Guard Station of the Varėna Border Guard District, were detained. Both officers were on duty at the time of their detention.
