Personnel issues as well as the results of an inspection of the Armed Forces were the topics of Defence Minister Viktar Khrenin’s report to Alyaksandr Lukashenka. He received the head of the military department following personnel appointments.
“If there is a normal person in charge of a specific area (we know this from experience), then the situation there will also be normal. If it is the wrong person — trouble follows. We agreed that you would seriously think about who you will continue serving with. That is the reason for our meeting and conversation,” Lukashenka told Khrenin at the beginning of the discussion.
He also proposed discussing the results of the Armed Forces inspection. The issue had already been raised during an event held by the ministry itself.
“I waited until you sorted out the good points and the shortcomings yourselves (there are always enough of them). But we did not particularly hide the shortcomings that exist in the army. I decided that we should not conceal these shortcomings, although we did not especially put them on display either. It does not happen that people speak badly about the Armed Forces somewhere. But we acted more openly than the leadership of other countries. Probably this is correct: people should see that we are not going to hide anything,” Lukashenka said.
He also expressed hope that work on eliminating and correcting the shortcomings identified during the inspection would continue.
“I very much hope that this process will not end and that the army leadership, and above all the minister, will pay the most serious attention to the shortcomings that were uncovered after this inspection,” he added.
According to him, Belarus will continue the targeted mobilization of military units for training purposes.
“Further, as I promised, we will selectively mobilize units in order to prepare them for war. God willing, it will be possible to avoid it,” Lukashenka said.
