Vilnius Airport Closed Again Due to Weather Balloons

On January 27, Vilnius Airport suspended operations due to objects resembling weather balloons flying in from Belarus. Airport operations were restricted from 19:05 to 20:05 local time (20:05–21:05 Minsk time).

“Due to the hybrid attack carried out by Belarus against Lithuania, civil aviation, and society, as well as the detection in aviation-hazardous zones of navigation marks characteristic of air balloons, airspace restrictions were introduced over Vilnius Airport on January 27 from 19:05 to 20:05,” the airport said in a statement.

In November and December 2025, Vilnius Airport was closed several times because of weather balloons flying in from Belarus. Lithuania closed its border with Belarus, demanding that Minsk resolve the problem. This led Belarus to refuse to allow Lithuanian trucks to leave the country even after the border was reopened. In January, Lithuania reported an improvement in the situation with weather balloons. According to the prime minister, the issue was resolved thanks to the efforts of the United States.
