An unknown account has been writing to former political prisoners, identifying itself as a BBC journalist, and after interviews offering “further communication on its own terms,” the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.
An unknown account under the name Mark Fridryh identifies itself as a freelancer, but there is no publicly available confirmation of his work for the BBC, while a reverse image search shows that the photo used in the profile may belong to another person or may have been created using AI.
It is known that the account writes to former political prisoners and offers them interviews. Among those who agreed to speak, rights defenders name Mikalai Dziadok. After the interview, the account’s author offers “further communication on its own terms.”
“This fact alone does not prove fraud, but together with the lack of a confirmed connection to the BBC, it provides serious grounds for caution. This is especially dangerous for former political prisoners, who may disclose information about themselves, their relatives and other people without knowing who they are actually speaking to”, the rights defenders warn.
A warning about the account’s activities has been sent to the BBC, which described the situation as “very serious and concerning” and said its staff were already taking measures, including contacting Meta.
