The Supreme State Council of the Union State has decided to organise suburban railway services between border regions of Belarus and Russia, BelTA reports.
Following the meeting, a decree was signed on the organisation and development of cross-border suburban passenger rail services between adjacent territories of Belarusian regions and constituent entities of the Russian Federation.
The document provides for the launch of train services in 2026–2028, starting from April 2026, on the Smolensk–Orsha and Smolensk–Vitsyebsk routes.
On the Smolensk–Orsha line, up to three pairs of trains per day are planned, depending on the season. On the Smolensk–Vitsyebsk route, trains will operate from several times a week to up to three times a day, depending on the time of year.
It is noted that services will be operated at affordable fares.
