Hrodna Man Accused of Running ‘Shadow Taxi Fleet’

Criminal cases have been opened against a 47-year-old entrepreneur from Hrodna who provided taxi services. Investigators allege that he evaded taxes and mandatory social insurance contributions and employed workers unofficially.

According to information from the Investigative Committee, the man set up a taxi fleet in 2021 and engaged 288 people during its operation, but formal employment contracts were signed with only 50 of them. The rest were paid in cash without the payments being recorded in accounting documents.

The entrepreneur is alleged to have deliberately understated the number of employees in his reports, allowing him to unlawfully use the simplified taxation system and avoid paying mandatory social insurance contributions. As a result, more than 236,000 Belarusian rubles was not paid to the Social Protection Fund, while unpaid taxes exceeded 164,000 Belarusian rubles. In addition, two drivers lacked the required experience and worked through other people’s accounts on the Yandex Taxi service.

The entrepreneur’s property worth more than 105,000 Belarusian rubles has been seized. He has repaid 30,000 Belarusian rubles in damages.

Criminal cases have been opened against the man under articles covering evasion of taxes and social insurance contributions that caused large-scale and especially large-scale damage. The investigation is continuing.
