Estonia’s parliament has elected a new president. The post went to Ülle Madise.
Seventy-one members of the Riigikogu voted for her. She needed 68 votes to be elected. Some members of parliament did not take part in the vote, including representatives of the Centre Party.
Ülle Madise is a lawyer by training. She previously worked at the Ministry of Justice, the Riigikogu Constitutional Committee, as a state auditor at the National Audit Office and as a legal adviser to the president. She was backed by lawmakers from four parties.
Madise will take office as president on Oct. 12, ERR reports.
