Two Drones Crash in Latvia

Two drones crashed in Latvia overnight after entering the country’s airspace from Russia. Several UAV incursions were recorded in total.

Latvian military officials said two drones had crashed. Units of the Armed Forces, police, and the State Fire and Rescue Service are operating at the scene, LSM reported.

According to firefighters, at about 3:30 a.m. emergency services received several calls about a possible fire at an oil storage facility in Rēzekne. Upon arrival, firefighters established that there was no open fire. Measures were taken to cool one of the storage tanks.

Local residents reported hearing alarming sounds during the night, including the noise of engines. Sounds resembling explosions and flashes of light were also heard.

A Latvian television crew working at the scene in Rēzekne filmed another drone flying overhead.

An airspace threat warning remains in effect in three districts.

Chairman of the Rēzekne Regional Council Guntars Skudra confirmed that one of the drones crashed on the territory of the East-West Transit branch in Rēzekne district. The drone struck an empty oil storage tank.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa said she expects a report from the responsible ministers after the conclusion of the drone incidents in Latgale.

Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds suggested that the drones could have been directed toward targets in Russia from Ukraine, but stressed that this remains only an assumption and the information still needs to be verified.
