Turchyn Finds New Gateway to Southeast Asia

Indonesia is serving as Belarus’ gateway to the Southeast Asian region, Prime Minister Alyaksandr Turchyn said during a meeting with Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto.

“It is gratifying to note that ties between our countries have strengthened significantly in recent years. Despite the distance, Belarus and Indonesia are close mentally and spiritually. We are united by a commitment to peace, friendship and partnership based on mutual respect. Belarus sees Indonesia as a true friend and reliable partner, a gateway to the vast Southeast Asian region,” he said.

Turchyn recalled the Indonesian president’s visit to Belarus last year. According to him, it gave momentum to the development of bilateral contacts. The prime minister confirmed Belarus’ readiness to implement all agreements reached.

“New horizons for trade and economic cooperation will open after the free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union and Indonesia comes into force. The Belarusian side is actively working on ratifying the agreement. The relevant draft law has already been approved by our parliament. I assure you that the Belarusian business community is looking forward to this event.

We invite Indonesian sectoral agencies and business circles to engage more actively with Belarusian partners, develop the legal framework for cooperation, participate in exhibitions and seminars, and organize joint business events. This approach will help us better understand each other’s needs, identify and find areas of mutual interest, establish direct contacts, and build long-term cooperation and partnerships,” Turchyn said.

“Let me also express congratulations on the recent Victory Day, the Day of the Great Victory in World War II. I would like to say that both Belarus and Indonesia share the same values and the same spirit of freedom and resistance to hegemony and aggression. We highly value the long-term relations between Indonesia and Belarus, which continue to strengthen every year and which were established 33 years ago with the beginning of diplomatic relations between our countries. And, of course, the visit of the president of the Republic of Indonesia in July 2025 demonstrates that the leaders of our countries maintain very close friendly relations that go beyond purely diplomatic and protocol communication, reaching a deeper and more personal level,” the Indonesian minister said in turn.

The meeting took place ahead of a session of the Belarusian-Indonesian intergovernmental joint commission on trade, economic and technical cooperation.

The day before, talks were also held at the Belneftekhim concern with Indonesian company PT INDONESIA BELARUS JAYA. The discussions focused on fertilizer supplies. Gomel Chemical Plant and Hrodna Azot presented their capabilities.
