Lithuanian border guards have discovered an underground tunnel leading from Belarus into Lithuania. It had not yet reached an exit on Lithuanian territory, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reported.
On the morning of July 22, border guards used technical equipment that detects ground vibrations to determine that an underground tunnel was likely being dug near the village of Peščiai in the Varėna District.
With the assistance of Polish border guards, who have the necessary equipment and experience in such operations, a borehole was drilled in the border zone. A tunnel about one meter in diameter was discovered at a depth of 1.5 meters. It extended from Belarusian territory approximately five meters beyond Lithuania’s state border. An exit onto Lithuanian territory had not yet been dug.
The tunnel was filled in. The Lithuanian authorities believe it was intended to smuggle migrants from Belarus into Lithuania.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched.
This year, Lithuanian border guards have uncovered three underground tunnels: on April 6, May 6, and May 26. In 2025, several tunnels were discovered on the Polish and Lithuanian borders.
