Belarusian Customs Uncovers Scheme for Illegal Import of Truck Tractors From the EU

Vitsyebsk customs officers uncovered a scheme involving the illegal import and legalization of three semi-truck tractors for which customs duties had not been paid. A criminal case has been opened over the large-scale evasion of customs payments.

As reported by the State Customs Committee, the truck tractors were imported into Belarus from European Union countries under the guise of vehicles previously registered in Russia. The vehicles were seized during special operations. A forensic examination confirmed that the VIN numbers had been altered.

Two Russian nationals were involved in organizing the scheme, acting in prior collusion with other individuals. The total amount of unpaid customs duties exceeded 173,000 Belarusian rubles.

A criminal case has been opened under Part 2 of Article 231 of the Criminal Code (evasion of customs payments). The article provides for a penalty of up to six years in prison.
