Terrorists want fear to define our lives, but we must not give them that power. Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said this on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
In 2001, terrorists hijacked several planes. Two of them crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York, causing them to collapse; one crashed into the Pentagon, and another in Pennsylvania. Passengers on the last plane fought back against the terrorists and prevented them from carrying out their plans.
“Today marks 25 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States. I join the American people in honouring the 2,977 people murdered that day.
For the families who lost someone, this is not distant history. It is a lifetime of moments that should have been shared. No passage of time can return what was stolen.
We honour the first responders who went towards danger, the passengers of Flight 93 who fought back, and everyone who risked their life to save another. We also remember those who have since died from illnesses linked to the attacks, and those still suffering today.
Their courage deserves more than our admiration. It asks us to protect one another, to confront terror together, and to defend the freedom to live without fear.
Those who use terror want fear to decide how we live. We must never give them that power.“, wrote Tsikhanouskaya on X.
