The press service of Belarusian democratic forces leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has released a statement regarding the telephone conversation between French President Emmanuel Macron and Aliaksandr Lukashenka. It says that “Lukashenka does not possess genuine independence, depends on the Kremlin, and does not represent the Belarusian people.”
“The main goal is to send Lukashenka a clear signal about the inadmissibility of Belarus being further drawn into the war, as well as participation in nuclear blackmail and the creation of threats in the region. At the same time, everyone understands that Lukashenka does not possess genuine independence, depends on the Kremlin, and does not represent the Belarusian people.
In recent months, we have seen pressure on neighboring countries continue, provocations continue, as well as repression against Belarusians. We must strive for systemic and irreversible democratic changes in Belarus and for genuine dialogue — dialogue with Belarusian society,” the statement says.
As previously reported, French President Emmanuel Macron held a telephone conversation with Aliaksandr Lukashenka earlier today. The talks took place on May 24 at the initiative of the French side.
The parties discussed “regional issues and Belarus’ relations with the EU and France in particular,” Lukashenka’s press service reported.
