Tsikhanouskaya Calls for Independent Investigation Into Minsk Metro Attack Anniversary

Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya addressed Belarusians on the 15th anniversary of the explosion in the Minsk metro, which killed 15 people and injured more than 400.

“Today is a day of remembrance and pain that has lived in our hearts for 15 years”, the politician said.

“15 people. Ordinary people who were simply going home, hurrying to their loved ones, living ordinary lives and making plans. And whose lives were cruelly cut short in a single moment. More than 400 were injured. No words can convey the horror experienced by hundreds of families and all of Belarus”, she wrote.

Tsikhanouskaya recalled how, during those tragic days, Belarusians did not stand aside — they transported the injured, provided medical assistance and searched hospitals for relatives.

“Even in the most difficult moments, Belarusians did not stand aside — they stayed together and helped one another”, she stressed.

The politician said that questions remained after the tragedy that could only be answered through a full, independent and transparent investigation that people could trust.

“This is a memory that remains with us. But memory is also responsibility. Responsibility to those who are no longer with us and to those who live today. And that is why the truth about this tragedy also matters. If questions remain in society years later, they can only be answered by a full, independent and transparent investigation that people can trust. People’s safety is the foundation on which any society stands”, she said.

The explosion occurred on April 11, 2011, at 5:55 p.m. The attack killed 15 people and injured hundreds. Two 25-year-old natives of Vitsyebsk, Dzmitry Kanavalau and Uladzislau Kavaliou, were found guilty. They were sentenced to death. In March 2012, it became known that the sentence had been carried out.
