U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that he is looking forward to meeting Aliaksandr Lukashenka. He also thanked him for the release of 250 political prisoners during the recent visit to Minsk by the U.S. president’s special envoy John Coale.
“Last week, my Envoy to Belarus, John Coale, after negotiating with Highly Respected President Alexander Lukashenko, got 250 more Political Prisoners freed! This brings the total Prisoners gracefully released by President Lukashenko to well over 500, since last May. I would like to give my warmest THANK YOU to the President for doing this, and I look forward to being with him at the next Board of Peace meeting!”, Trump wrote.
It is worth recalling that Aliaksandr Lukashenka did not attend the first meeting of the Peace Council in February. While in Minsk, John Coale expressed disappointment over Lukashenka’s absence from the first session, but said he is expected at the next meeting. On Friday, Lukashenka’s press secretary Natalia Eismant stated that the possibility of a meeting between Lukashenka and Trump is being considered. Speaking about participation in the Peace Council, Eismant said that Lukashenka will take part in the meeting “if the session takes place this year and if it is acceptable for the Belarusian side.”
